WHAT IS FACEBOOK? Facebook Intro

Facebook is a type of social networking: ● Make connections with friends, family, and sometimes business associates ○ Be mindful of what you are saying on Facebook and adding bosses and colleagues as “friends” ○ You can also make pages for your own business- small or large ● Organize events like birthday parties, church functions, fundraises, etc. ● Create pages for your organization: business, nonprofit, even special interests.

History & Statistics ● Founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard student, as a means for college students to network ● In 2006, users 13 and older were welcomed to join. ● 1 billion active users worldwide

GETTING STARTED ON FACEBOOK Creating an Account

Step 1 ● Type into your web browser. ● This page should pop up:

Step 2 ● Fill out the required information: ○ Name ○ ○ Password ○ Gender ○ Birthday ● Click “Sign Up”

Step 3: Enter the Captcha ● Captchas are programs that websites and systems use to make sure automated robots and virulent programs cannot make accounts on their sites. ● Usually letters or numbers that you must read and type in a box. ● Example:

Step 4 ● This page will pop-up. Notice that small link on the bottom right which says skip this step. Click this instead of “finding friends.” Click me!!!

Step 5 ● Check your to Complete the sign-up process ● Open the from Facebook ● Click link to verify your account

Step 6 ● Sign-in with the address and password you used. Click log-in. PASSWORD

Facebook Layout

Newsfeed The News feed is a stream of updates from your friends and any Facebook Pages you follow.

Timeline Also known as your profile page, the Timeline is where you'll share information about yourself on Facebook.

About The about me section is where you can add information about your work, education, and interests.

Profile Picture ● This is usually a picture of yourself. You will see the default placeholder shown below when you first sign up for an account.

Status Updates ● Used when you want to post a single picture, anecdote, or even a video ● Example: “My daughter is getting married today and I am so excited!” ● Note the lock on the lower right. This sets your audience. Most posts SHOULD NOT be public

Status Updates ● Make your first post ○ I just signed up for Facebook in computer class!

Search Bar ● Find products you like, friends, family, pages, groups, etc. ● This is the easiest way to go to a friend’s profile!

Activity ● Search for a classmate ● Click on their profile ● Add them as a friend ● You’ll need to accept your friend requests

You Can Also... ● Comment on people’s posts. ● “Like” posts. ● Create Photo Albums ● Write on someone else’s timeline ● Join groups for common interests ● Become a fan of something (like the musical artist Prince!)

9 Pieces of Information Never to Display (or share) on Facebook ● Vacation Plans ● Phone Number ● Address ● Birth Date (Day, Month, and Year- it’s ok to post the Day and the Month) ● Personal Finance Information ● SSN ● Your Password ● Something which might give away your password ● Anything you don’t want to become public knowledge

Tips for an Ironclad Password! ● Make it a combination of letters, symbols, and numbers ● User upper and lowercase letters ● Don’t necessarily use a real word ● Don’t include any information about yourself or past locations in your password ● If you must write it down, keep it somewhere smart like a safe or even your wallet ● Change your password at least once every three months!

Privacy Settings ● Facebook’s privacy settings allow the user to choose they audience for everything they post ○ Public ○ Friends ○ Limited ● It is highly recommend only letting your friends see your posts, no public posts at all.
