World War I – The Great War Gets Greater Unit 5 Chapter 23 Section 2 Unit 5 Chapter 23 Section 3

Tactics and Technology Old tactics utilized lines, single-shot weapons, and open fields New technology of the war included airplanes, airships, gas, and machine guns –Trenches dug in fields to avoid enemy Area between trenches called “No-Man’s Land” –Life in trenches brings on new challenges Shellshock PTSD New tactics never formally developed during the conflict Hey Kos, why not draw a diagram of trenches?

New Technology Airplanes – Initially observation but evolve into weapons Airships – Large and scary bombers but slow Machine guns/repeating guns – Gives individual soldiers chance to kill multiple enemies Gas Warfare – Takes out a large group of soldiers at one time Submarines – Undetectable before radar, temporarily outlawed –Germany declared “unrestricted submarine warfare” –Any enemy ship will be sunk

The Zimmerman Telegram and the Lusitania – America Checks In America initially neutral Lusitania was a British ship carrying American civilians Sunk by a German submarine (U-Boat) To keep America out, Germany contacts Mexico Tells them if they invade U.S. Germany will eventually help them retake land America intercepts telegram 1917 – The United States declared war on Germany

The Russian Revolution – Russia Check Out Similar to French Revolution –Rich royal family abusing lower and working classes 1917 – Bolsheviks overthrow Czar Nicholas II Russia can’t fight Great War and Civil War at the same time Vladimir Lenin rises to power

Hey Kos, why not introduce the technology project? You might want to give out that line of progression thing too.
