JRA2-brainstorming 4/1/2006, Lucie Linssen, slide 1 introduction to CERN in EUDET The CERN PH (physics) department participates in EUDET PH department: ~500 staff members ~170 fellows and paid scientific associates ~ 4600 users

JRA2-brainstorming 4/1/2006, Lucie Linssen, slide 2 PH department main activity Preparing the LHC experiments ATLAS, CMS (TOTEM), ALICE, LHCb

JRA2-brainstorming 4/1/2006, Lucie Linssen, slide 3 CERN participation EUDET Given the fact that CERN is at present still overcommitted with LHC, the EUDET participation was chosen to be compatible with R&D activities already carried out in the PH department. In practice this means: => activities within the PH support groups for Detectors – Electronics - Software in absence of strategic decisions for post- LHC => where possible, in synergy with future options for CERN

JRA2-brainstorming 4/1/2006, Lucie Linssen, slide 4 CERN participation EUDET EUDET activities within the Detector – Electronics – Software support groups PH-DT1 (detector technologies) –JRA1 => magnetic field calibration PH-SFT (software for physics) –NA2 => hadronization simulation model PH-MIC (microelectronics) –NA2 => microelectronics user support –JRA2 => Timepix for SiTPC PH-ED (electronics design) –JRA2 => integrated compact gas detector readout

JRA2-brainstorming 4/1/2006, Lucie Linssen, slide 5 PH support groups In the next slides, a quick introduction to the CERN PH support groups will be given, including highlights of the facilities/services accessible to users: –Detector technologies –Electronics –Software for experiments

JRA2-brainstorming 4/1/2006, Lucie Linssen, slide 6 Detector technologies Groups PH-DT1 and PH-DT2 Expertise in: –Gaseous detectors GEM, wire det., straw det., TPC, TPC field cage –Solid state detectors Radiation hard developments, thin structures –RICH detectors Radiators, mirrors, HPD –Experimental magnets Magnets construction, calibration, control –Mech. Engineering and Support structures for detectors

JRA2-brainstorming 4/1/2006, Lucie Linssen, slide 7 Detector technologies Facilities/services within the PH-DT1 and PH-DT2 groups (accessible to CERN users): Silicon facility: bond lab, probe stations Thin film and glass lab Irradiation facility (PS East Hall beam) Scintillator lab Construction of gas systems for detectors 1 mechanical workshop accessible to CERN users Technical support for experimental magnets

JRA2-brainstorming 4/1/2006, Lucie Linssen, slide 8 Electronics Groups PH-MIC, PH-ED, PH-ESS With expertise in: Microelectronics chip design (digital/analog) Radiation hard (micro-)electronics design Optoelectronics Electronic system design + DAQ interfaces Controls, timing and readout sequencing Power distribution, interconnection Packaging (from ASIC packaging to crates)

JRA2-brainstorming 4/1/2006, Lucie Linssen, slide 9 Electronics Facilities/services within the PH electronics groups (accessible to CERN users): Access to deep sub-micron technologies and design tools (see NA2 talk) Electronics Pool Common ordering /supplies (…power supplies, crates, modular electronics) Environmental test equipment –Climatic chamber –Test magnet Chip testing facilities Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF) …etc…

JRA2-brainstorming 4/1/2006, Lucie Linssen, slide 10 Software for experiments PH-SFT group Mandate: design, development and maintenance of common software for HEP experiments (simulation, reconstruction, analysis, grid applications) Examples: GEANT4, Pythia, ROOT, Garfield, mathematical libraries, grid applications

JRA2-brainstorming 4/1/2006, Lucie Linssen, slide 11 CERN-EUDET user support EUDET project is registered at CERN (grey book and users office) –User registration as unpaid associates in group PH-UGC (needs signature of CERN Team leader => Lucie Linssen) EUDET computing group “ED” has been set up –Administrators: Michael Hauschild, John Apostolakis, Jan Timmermans
