GENETICALLY MODIFIED PLANTS AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON HEALTH

Genetically modified plants are plants that are genetically modified aiming to better resist pests, diseases, the variations in temperature and produce a sharp increase in production per hectare. Genetically modified organisms have been banned because of the effects they have on the human body.

Advantages: Scientists didn’t reach a consensus on the effects that GMOs consumption has on human health or environment, whether their consumption is safe or risky. Advantages: Reduced use of pesticides involve reduced costs in agriculture. Food prices decrease. Reduce global warming. Crops can be harvested earlier and more often throughout the year. Increased plant resistance to various diseases.

Disadvantages: Are toxic to other organisms. Genetically modified foods do not taste the same as the natural ones. Possible damages to the environment. Humans may develop various allergies or may worsen existing ones. Ecological imbalances can occur. Can cause other significant damage to the human body. Not all the risks and dangers that may arise from the introduction of GMOs are yet known.

World population is increasing and new sources of food are needed World population is increasing and new sources of food are needed. Genetically modified foods are a controversial solution to this problem as they can create us greater health problems. They can be found in various common foods like hamburgers, milk, cheese or bread .

The most unpleasant effects of GMOs may include the following : Allergies The biggest concern related to these organisms modified by man in the laboratory is related to allergies that may be caused by them. Proteins are those that cause the allergic reaction increasing allergen levels already present in it or can create new others that hadn’t been in the original plant. Antibiotic resistance Plants resulting from the genetic modification are tested using antibiotics. New created cells are resistant to antibiotics and can cause problems to people who will consume that food . Serious diseases Genetic processing process brings with it many surprises. The result may be a well-known disease like cancer. Other disorders associated with genetically modified organisms are related to fertility, diabetes and Alzheimer.

A study conducted by Russian scientists on genetically modified soybean confirmed that the rats fed with genetically modified soy protein presented major changes that could be observed on the liver, kidney and testes. Females rats presented an increased aggression towards puppies. Another study led by the French Scientific Institute of GM maize showed that laboratory rats fed with this corn have changed in terms of weight, but also presented changes in major organs such as brain, heart, kidneys or liver.

In Romania, the cultivation of GM soya was banned in 2007. At present a single variety of genetically modified maize is being legally cultivated.
