Why read to children? 1. Reading creates a bond between the reader and the child (social & emotional development)

2. Reading is a good form of entertainment

3. Reading is educational - teaches about the world around us (intellectual development)

4. Reading allows children to learn things that they may not otherwise experience (vicarious) (intellectual development)

Qualities to look for in a book

1.Is the book appropriate for the age of the child?

2.Is the book made to be durable? washable cloth or plastic or thick cardboard for young children

3.Are there an appropriate number of words per page for the age of the child?

4.Are the words used at the appropriate level of difficulty?

5.Are the pictures colourful and suitable?

6.Is the message of the book a suitable one?
