Portfolio Collage Project August 11-14, 2015

Warm up: Day One In your sketch / notebook, write “Portfolio Collage” at the top of the page. Draw a horizontal line in the middle of the page. Draw a vertical line down the middle of the top box. Example: Portfolio Collage

Vocabulary Directions: Write vocabulary words on the bottom half of your page. 1. Dada— 2. Surreal—

Man Ray At the top of the first column, write “Man Ray.” Watch the short biography video: He lived during the _______ century. He painted, sculpted, created collages, and took “__________________.” His collages looked like:

Turn and Talk Which collage would be easiest to make? Which collage would be the hardest? What is one good thing about each type of collage? What is one obstacle you might face when making each type of collage?

Planning On the back of your notes, write the type of collage you would like to try: Man Ray’s style Logo Wrap Paper Strip Painting Torn Paper Quilt Pattern Draw a quick, sloppy sketch of what pattern you might make.

Materials Safety Scissors: Cut slowly and carefully Do not walk with scissors Leave on table when not in use Glue:Cap tightly when not in use Do not sniff or lick!!

Getting started Begin choosing magazines and papers you will use. Carefully cut out the shapes you will use. Begin laying them out, but don’t use glue today. It is ok to bring cut-outs from home.

Cleaning up Clip your paper pieces together. Put your paper in a zip-lock bag. Supplies: Take up baggies and materials. Trash: Go around with the trash can and pick up scraps. Everyone must be clean and seated when it is time to dismiss.

Day Two: Warm up On the bottom half of your notes page, write a definition in your own words: 3. Portfolio— 4. Collage—

Folding the portfolio Fold your paper or poster board in half. We will be making a pouch folder with your collage on the front and your name on the back. Only use one half of your paper or poster board when making your collage.

Day Four: Warm Up Draw a line underneath your definitions. Write one complete sentence to answer this question: Whose collages did you prefer– Man Ray’s or Hannah Höch’s? Why? Your sentence will look like this: I prefer the collage of ____________ because ___________________________.

Collage Portfolio Continue working on your collages. When you finish, on the back, write your first and last name and the block in big letters. Go over the letters with a dark marker. When you are finished, staple the sides of our portfolios and cover the edges with decorative tape At the end of class, we will complete a personal reflection sheet.

Clean Up Trash: Walk around with the trash can. Supplies: Neatly stack construction paper and magazines on the shelf. Papers: Take up any completed reflection papers. Keepers: Take up portfolios and place them on the racks.
