Hades King of the Underworld, the god of death and the dead Latin: Hades, Ades, Aidoneus Greek: Pluto Translation: Unseen One Parents: Kronos and Rhea Born on the island of Crete I chose this picture because this is a picture of Hades when Orpheus journeyed to the Underworld. In this picture, you can also see Persephone, his wife, holding a torch. In my opinion, she looks very bored. I remember reading that she never actually wanted to be Hades’s wife and be forced to stay in the Underworld with him. That is why I chose this picture. Painter: Name vase Underworld Painter Date: ca 330 - 310 BC

Hades cont. Attributes: dark-bearded, regal god He possessed a helmet which rendered the wearer invisible (Helm of Darkness He owns everything precious that lays in the ground (jewels) I chose this picture because this is a picture of Hades on his thrown in the underworld with his dog. Around the dog’s neck and curling around its body is a snake or serpent, which is the sign of evil. In Genesis in the Bible, Eve was tricked by the serpent to eat from the tree of knowledge, thus leading to God’s fury. I find it interesting that there is a snake around Hades’s dog. That is why I chose this picture. Hades mit Kerberos - aus Meyers Konversationslexikon von 1888
