Vocabulary and Concept Development EDI Standard: 1.4 Students will identify common roots and affixes derived from Greek and Latin and use this knowledge to analyze the meaning of complex words (e.g., international).

Activating Prior Knowledge Have you heard the word combine? The word connect has the prefix con-. Can you see the prefix re- in review? What does review mean?

Concept Development Prefix : A word element that is placed at the beginning of the root or word stem. Prefix: Part of a word that is placed at the beginning of the root or word stem.

Concept Development com- or con- : Latin prefix meaning with or together: also used as an intensive. re- : Latin prefix meaning back or returning to a previous state; again, anew, or over again. com- or con-: Prefix from Latin meaning “together” or “with.” re- : Prefix from Latin meaning “back” or “again.”
