Types of Communication Verbal (talking) Non-verbal (body language) Visual communication (visual aids, ex. maps) Written communication (pen & paper, texting)
Effective communication depends on the accurate transmission of a message What are some barriers to accurate transmission? How have you had a communication problem or failure to communicate? Was there a miscommunication because of lack of understanding?
The Communication Process: The Elements in the Communication Process, at its simplest, are: Sender Message Receiver Feedback And the loop begins again!
Sender The Communicator Effectiveness is determined by Attitude Selection of meaningful symbols Depends on audience and environment
Message A communication in writing, in speech, in symbols Message is either verbal, auditory, or visual
Receiver The person/machine/animal receiving the message Also a communicator if they respond.
Feedback Verbal or nonverbal reaction or response Allows communicator to adjust message and be more effective if needed. Without feedback, there is no way of knowing if communication took place.
Communication Barriers Communication Barriers are the various obstacles and hurdles which may arise during communication and lead to misunderstandings and misinterpretations by the receiver.
