Involvement of a specific racial group in the use of drugs and/or drug trafficking in the United States BY CARLY PEERCY
REFLECTION PAGE ( 3 ) RESEARCH ARTICLES ( 4 & 5 ) CHARTS AND TABLES ( 6 & 7 ) BOOK SUMMARY
At the beginning of the semester we had to write a page on what we knew about this topic before we did any research… I thought this would be an interesting topic to do because I recently lost my uncle to drugs and I wanted to find out more about it and how drugs get into the United States. I do know a little bit of drugs and drug trafficking because of history with my uncle as well as some of the classes i have taken in college. I remember learning about drug trafficking during my Life, Society and Drug class a few semesters ago and learned that Crime statistics show that in 1999 in the United States blacks were far more likely to be targeted by law enforcement for drug crimes, and received much stiffer penalties and sentences than whites. I wanted to learned more about this and what has changed if anything. I saw on the internet a study that in 2013 by the American Civil Liberties Union determined that a black person in the United States was 3.7 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than a white person, even though both races have similar rates of marijuana use. Which was very shocking to me that in this day an age this is still happening so it made me more excited to be able to do this project on this topic. Its also interesting to me that When police bust a drug dealer, often they discover that the suspect lives a kind of "millionaire lifestyle" complete with luxury cars, jewelry, high-end spirits and clothing. Drug money is regularly spent on luxury goods. This is about all I know about drug trafficking involving a specific racial or ethnic group so I'm excited to do more research.
This reseach journal tell all about drug trafficking and the process of drug trafficking. This activity involves importating, manufacturing, cultivation, distribution, and/or saleing of illicit drugs. In this a very illegal and dangerous system, narcotics (drugs) are moved from smugglers, growers, or manufacturers to wholesalers who pass the product down through the chain of distribution to retailers and eventually to the consumer or drug user. Drug trafficking is a long chaine of illegal commercial activity all for profit. Importers typically have connections in source countries and smuggle drugs such as cocaine, heroin, hashish, and marijuana into host countries. This article talks about how growers produce marijuana crops often through sophisticated hydroponic operations while manufacturers produce DESROCHES, FREDERICK. "Journal of Drug Issues." RESEARCH ON UPPER LEVEL DRUG TRAFFICKING: A REVIEW (2007): Sage. 1 Oct Web.
This article examines research on upper level drug traffickers in the U.S., the UK, Canada, and the Netherlands. Studies of higher level drug trafficking indicate that drug markets represent informal and loosely organized associations of relatively small syndicates or crews of independent drug dealers. This article sums up how most dealers are highly cautious, eschew the use of violence, typically make huge profits, attempt to maintain a low profile, rationalize their conduct as business activity, and operate within geographically smart markets. This book opened my eyes to the real nature of the cartels that have expanded into the U.S. Mexican Cartels have for many years been active on this side of the Mexico/Texas border in drug and human trafficking, but are now often shielded by so-called legitimate businesses as the book said. The only thing I didn’t like about this book and it made the author look a little racism on some of the things she said about the drug cartels. I understand they are almost all a certain race but I know a lot of Hispanics that don’t believe in the cartels and are against all of their beliefs. Terror on the Border illustrates the growing problem of drug trafficking. In the book an innocent Mexican girl, Juanita Delgado, was a victim of human trafficking. This book was very good and I actually learned a lot.
Now that the semester is coming to a close its time to write everything I learned about my topic throughout this semester. I was so glad I took this class, I was able to relate a lot to it, as well as I was able to relate to this topic so it was nice to be able to learn about it. My uncle was actually shot in a drug trafficking situation. So it was interesting to learn about how drug trafficking came into the us and what started it. The United States has been fighting a losing war against drugs for decades. Its really scary to learn how adolescent drug abuse is increasing, overdose deaths are at record levels, heroin and cocaine are cheaper, more pure and more available than ever before, and health problems related to drugs, especially the spread of HIV/AIDS are increasing instead of going down. I think we need to do something and make a change in our society. Drug problems can be reduced at less cost if we change course and adopt strategies that work.
