What is the IPC? Information Processing Cycle Converts data to information Consists of: Data Acquisition, Input, Data Validation, Data Processing, Data Storage, Data Retrieval, Output, Communication, Archiving and/or Disposal
Types of Information Systems – Transaction Processing Systems Records day-to-day business transactions of a company or business, for example, Customer orders, Invoicing, Inventory, Ordering.
Types of Information Systems – Expert Systems Specialised problem solving model represented by software that emulates what an expert would do to solve a problem and provide a solution. Artificial Intelligence? Expert systems are used in Elevator control in large buildings, Assisting in medical diagnosis, Machine/mechanical diagnostics.
Types of Information Systems - Management Information Systems Computer based system that provides up to date information for middle- level management. Used to: Assist with budget generation, Produce production schedules, Ordering or equipment, components and services.
Types of Information Systems - Decision Support Systems Provide tools that allow experts and managers to make important decisions with the use of software. Provides: Ability to produce graphs and tables, High level data analysis tools. Predict the impact of business decisions being considered.
Types of Information Systems – Embedded Systems Usually can only perform a single function and have been specially created (and often hardwired) to do this. Can often be found in: Network firewalls, Robotic devices, Transport systems, Automobile control systems.
Types of Information Systems – Distributed Systems Systems where data, processing and/or applications are distributed across a network or the Internet. As opposed to ‘old’ days on networks when ‘dumb’ terminals accessed a main server containing everything.
Types of Information Systems – Office Automation Systems A system consisting of a variety of software packages allowing users to: Create, Collect, Store, Manipulate, Communicate. Examples: Allow staff to manage work attendance schedules, Provide a method by which documents can be created, formatted, stored and then communicated via an Intranet and the Web.
