What different types of evidence does the fossil record provide? The fossil record provides snapshots of the past that when assembled illustrates a panorama of evolutionary change over the past four billion years.
Evidence An individual fossil contains information about its lifetime in other words fossils can tell us about growth patterns in ancient animals. Ex: Annual wood rings are formed as a tree trunk grows. The growth of the rings tells how long an individual has lived
Evidence Some fossils give us information about how adults took care of their young. Ex. These are nests of two different types of dinosaurs.
Evidence Fossils teach us about the lives of extinct organisms and how they came to be. Ex: Nicholas Steno was the first to discover that the rock commonly known as “Tongue Stones” were related to shark teeth and that fossils were a record of life.
Evidence Fossils close together can tell paleontologists that some animals lived in herds.
Evidence Fossils can tell us of the changes of animals features over time. Fossils can tell us the developing patterns of ancient animals
