Quality to Management – a reflection on the IAEA standards and their expectations Iain J McNair

Quality Assurance no longer used as a term. It [the Safety Requirement] uses the term ‘management system’ rather than ‘quality assurance’.

What is meant by Management System The term management system reflects and includes the initial concept of ‘quality control’ (controlling the quality of products) and its evolution through quality assurance (the system to ensure the quality of products) and ‘quality management’ (the system to manage quality).

Changes in the last 30 years. 1980s – Product Quality – BS 5750 / AQAPs etc 1990s – Process Basis & Management Systems – QA – ISO 9000 series, IAEA 50-C/SG-Q 2000 – Quality Management Systems – ISO 9001:2008 replacing 2000 version Integrated Management Systems – IAEA GS-R “ integrates safety, health, environmental, security, quality and economic elements to ensure that safety is properly taken into account in all the activities of an organization.”

Areas in IAEA GS-R-3 calling on senior management involvement Leadership and Organisational Aspects Peer Evaluation and Technical Review Continual Improvement Resources and Infrastructure Self-Assessment and Independent Assessment
