The Story of Negro League Baseball We Are The Ship The Story of Negro League Baseball Book written by: Kadir Nelson PowerPoint by: Charlie Johns

The Negro Leagues The Negro Leagues were created because the African Americans weren’t hired to professional teams due to an agreement among the owners. So these gifted players decided to create small, semi pro teams.

Some of the teams were… The Newark Eagles The Detroit Stars The Indianapolis Clowns The St. Louis Stars The Cleveland Buckeyes

Before the Negro League Baseball Before Negro League Baseball, a hand full of African Americans playing professional baseball at the time. A man named Bud Fowler was the first African American to play professional baseball. Bud Fowler

Other Players Bud Fowler was not the only African American professional player. There were the likes of Ben Taylor, Pete Hill, Rube Foster, Grant “Homerun” Johnson, and many more. These players became stars of the Negro Leagues. Ben Taylor Pete Hill Grant “Homerun” Johnson

Life In the Leagues The players had a hard life in the Negro Leagues. They would drive through the country by bus, playing 2 to 3 games a day. They basically lived in these buses. Many did not mind because they were doing what they loved.

Today Today there are many African Americans in Professional Baseball (MLB, AAA, AA). There are no segregated baseball leagues in existence today. All races play the great game of baseball side by side happily.
