A Linking Overview Winter 2003 A Linking Overview ICOLC Meeting-March 27th

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 Topics Covered Why do libraries need a link resolver? What is LinkSource and what can it do for your members? Linking partners. How EBSCO works with consortia. LinkSource pricing.

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 Libraries want to provide their patrons with easy access to full text content. Libraries are challenged with consolidating central access to all available resources. Configuring links in every individual resource is inefficient and can be a time-consuming maintenance exercise. The Problem

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 Link Resolvers Provides a single point of access to many web-based resources. Since OpenURL is a becoming a standard syntax, many products can now access the same content. LinkSource, EBSCO’s proprietary OpenURL link resolver:

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 Referred to as an item-level linker. All resources relate back to the article of interest. Accessed after a patron conducts a search in an OpenURL compliant database, and selects an item of interest from the result list or detail display. LinkSource is…

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 A search engine that simultaneously searches multiple online services. LinkSource does not ‘search’ resources. It is configured to appropriately display links to resources based on the nature of an item, such as a citation. LinkSource is not…

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 Access to Full Text  LinkSource was built on the ability to access validated* full text from three sources: 1. EBSCOhost databases 2. EBSCOhost Electronic Journals Service 3. CrossRef  Article-level access to over 16 million full text articles from 12,000 journals from these three sources.  LinkSource can also be configured to link to other full text providers. * LinkSource checks that both the journal and article are available for content from resources identified in items 1-3.

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 Link Sources and Targets LinkSource can link to hundreds of web-based targets. Partners with products that can link to LinkSource: American Mathematical Society BioMed Central CAS DIALOG EBSCOhost Endeavor Ex Libris (Aleph) Fretwell Downing Gale HW Wilson Ingenta Innovative Interfaces Institute of Physics ISI Web of Knowledge Muse Global OCLC OVID NCBI (PubMed) RLG SilverPlatter Sirsi ZPORTAL zetoc

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 “All-inclusive pricing” includes training, support and account setup and maintenance. LinkSource is configured by customers in EBSCOadmin. No restrictions are placed on what the customer can control. Link text, mouse-over text, and the order of the links on the menu can all be customized. LinkSource can work with exported A-to-Z list content. LinkSource Configuration

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 Library Benefits Central access to resources from many different products. Configuration and customization of links to resources is controlled in EBSCOadmin, not in each individual product. LinkSource can be easily configured for timely implementation. Lesser-known resources are potentially ‘exposed’, generating an increase in usage.

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 Consortium can provide resource links that their institutions ‘adopt’. Institutions can also customize LinkSource by adding their own resource links. Statistical reports for both the consortium and their member institutions are generated. For Consortia

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 LinkSource is an economical, hosted solution for item-level linking. Pricing is based on FTE ranges for academic customers. Discounts are allowed on LinkSource when selected EBSCO secondary databases are purchased in conjunction with LinkSource. Consortium discounts are available, including multi-type library consortium. LinkSource Pricing

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 Based on FTE for 4 year academic customers. $1,000 discounts for each purchase *: BasicBiosis, Biological Abstracts, CINAHL, INSPEC, MLA Bibliography, PsycArticles, PsycINFO $500 discounts for each purchase *: ATLA/ATLAS package, each HW Wilson database * Customers of these databases receive discounts. LinkSource Pricing FTE per InstitutionPriceMin. With Discount 15,000+$15,000$7,000 10,000-14,999$13,200$6,000 9,999-5,000$11,600$6,000 4,999-2,000$10,200$6,000 2,000 and below$9,700$4,000

A Linking Overview – ICOLC 2003 LinkSource can be centrally purchased by a consortia for its participating institutions. Discounts based on selected secondary databases will be given, whether purchased by consortium or the institution. Pricing is based on the creation of a single consortium-wide profile (least expensive), or customization for each institution. Further discounts apply if an entire consortium purchases LinkSource.
