Slide 1 A Free sample background from © 2003 By Default! HANDLING DATA IN INFORMATION SYSTEM 19 July 2005 Tuesday Lower 6 th Computing Lesson Prepared by: a) Methods of inputting & gathering data b) The functions of the methods of inputting & gathering data

Slide 2 A Free sample background from © 2003 By Default! Methods of inputting & gathering data  Keyboard  Voice Recognition  Barcodes  Optical Mark Recognition (OMR)  Magnetic Stripe Cards  Optical Character Recognition (OCR)  Data logging  Touch Screens

Slide 3 A Free sample background from © 2003 By Default! Keyboard  Keyboard is the oldest and most familiar of all input devices.  Keyboards are intelligent devices and contain their own chips.  A standard keyboard is called as a QWERTY keyboard because of the arrangement of letters of the top row of the alphabet keys.  There are invented special keyboards for the disabled and visually-impaired users keyboard.

Slide 4 A Free sample background from © 2003 By Default! Barcodes  Barcodes are used to track record of details of an item.  It is used in supermarkets, library systems, ticketing and reservation system, stock control and so on.  Barcode systems are now at an advanced stage and readers can record barcodes at distances of 5 metres or more.

Slide 5 A Free sample background from © 2003 By Default! Optical Mark Recognition (OMR)  Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) is used to sense marks made on a special form in certain places.  Uses of optical mark readers include multiple choice answer sheet marking, capturing data from questionnaires and enrolment forms and the checking of football pools coupons and so on.  But people who have never completed optical mark reading sheets can have problems filling them in.

Slide 6 A Free sample background from © 2003 By Default! Optical Mark Recognition (OMR)  The advantages are the use of OMR is that details do not have to be typed in and reduces the cost of inputting large volumes of data. Besides it is useful and very quick.  The disadvantages are being filled in by the general public then very clear instructions are needed and if the forms are folded then they maybe rejected by the machine.

Slide 7 A Free sample background from © 2003 By Default! Magnetic Stripe Cards  You can see magnetic stripe readers at the side of computerised tills (often called as electronic point-of-sale (EPOS) terminals).  It shows one being used to read information contained in the magnetic stripe of a credit card.

Slide 8 A Free sample background from © 2003 By Default! Optical Character Recognition (OCR)  Optical character recognition (OCR) is a method of inputting text using a scanner along with special software to turn the scanned image into the standard ASCII code.  In other words, the text is no longer treated as a picture, since each individual letter is recognised on its own and can therefore be edited using word processing software.  OCR can be used to scan financial documents such as company accounts directly into spreadsheets, as well as to scan text directly into wordprocessors.

Slide 9 A Free sample background from © 2003 By Default! YOUR TASKS  Find the details of the following methods of inputting & gathering data: 1. Voice Recognition 2. Data Loggings 3. Touch Screen … from any relevant websites or textbooks and SUBMIT ON: 21 st JULY 2005 – THURSDAY. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION!!!!!
