Introduction to Model Drawing Elissa Scillieri

How would you do this?

What is Model Drawing? A tool used to help students visually represent word problems.

Why Model Drawing? Helps students visualize mathematics Requires students to show their thinking Addresses Mathematical Practices: #2: Reason abstractly and quantitatively. #3: Construct viable arguments and critique the meaning of others. #4: Model with mathematics.

Reaching Conceptual Understanding Concrete Blocks, chips, etc. Pictorial Number lines, bar models, etc. Abstract Number sentences (equations)

First Grade Word Problem

Introducing Model Drawing

Now you try!

A Challenge!

4 Steps for Problem Solving 1.Read the problem. 2.Write the answer sentence. 3.Work bit-by-bit to model the problem. 4.Do the math.

Use the 4 Steps to Solve This Problem:

A Two-Step Problem

Another Two-Step Problem

How would you draw a model for this problem?

A Challenge

Model this problem:

Be careful showing this problem:

Using models to show fractional parts:

Are you smarter than a 5th grader?
