The Moon landing conspiracy theory

The 1969 Moon landings conspiracy theory People who don’t believe the Moon landings took place claim they were faked by NASA. They say no human being has ever put a foot on the moon. Some of the people who don’t believe anyone landed on the moon believe a film producer Stanley Kubrick who directed 2001: A Space Odyssey was hired to make a film of a fake moon

Fox news programme claiming the moon landing was a conspiracy 9 minutes of Fox News programme promoting the Moon landing conspiracy theory. This is the first part of a longer programme

Questions about the extract from the Fox News programme Your answers How is this film introduced? As neutral or one sided? Why do they use the NASA film from 1969 at the start? How is the first “expert” introduced? Why is he said to be an expert? What is the case he makes for the moon landing being untrue?

Questions Your answer How far is the NASA expert allowed to answer the claims? How is the second expert introduced? What reasons are given for the USA faking the moon landings? Why is a fictional film, Capricorn 1 used in this video? You might want to watch the rest of the film – it is available on YouTube

BBC news clip on the Moon landing conspiracy theory A 3 min BBC news clip answering some of the issues raised by Fox News

Questions about the BBC News clip on the moon landing conspiracy Your answer How is news clip introduced. Is it neutral or one sided? Why do you think they use the video of the moon landing? How does the journalist present the claims of the people who say the moon landings did not take place?

Questions about the BBC News clip on the moon landing conspiracy Your answer How does the journalist reject the claims? How is the person who says the moon landing are fake used? Why does the journalist say he has incontrovertible evidence? What does incontrovertible mean?

Claims and counter claim 1 Evidence for the conspiracy: Pictures of Apollo astronauts erecting a US flag on the Moon show the flag bending and rippling. How can that be? After all, there's no breeze on the Moon.... .

Claim and counter claim 1 Evidence for the moon landing: Not every waving flag needs a breeze -- at least not in space. When astronauts were planting the flagpole they rotated it back and forth to better penetrate the lunar soil. So of course the flag waved! Unfurling a piece of rolled-up cloth with stored angular momentum will naturally result in waves and ripples -- no breeze required! http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2001/ast23feb_2/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=07kcPQyk7So

Claim and counter claim 2 Evidence for the conspiracy. There are no landing marks on the surface of the moon made by the Lunar Lander.

Claim and counter claim 2 Evidence for the moon landing. The Lunar Lander certainly had a huge mass but with the moon's low gravity - a 6th of Earth's gravity, the 17 ton would actually have weighed 17/6 = 2.8 tons. That certainly isn't enough to leave a crater at the landing site; aided by the fact that the lunar soil particles "lock" with each other. http://www.hasaan.com/2012/08/debunking-moon-conspiracy-theories.html

Claim and counter claim 3 Evidence for the conspiracy. There are no stars in the sky which proves this is a fake moon landing.

Claim and counter claim 3 Evidence for the moon landing. If you've ever taken a photograph outside at night, you'll notice that faint distant objects don't show up. It's because the brightness of the nearby objects washes out the film. In fact if you were standing on the day side of the moon, you'd have to somehow block the landscape out in order for your eyes to adapt enough to pick out the stars. http://www.space.com/12814-top-10-apollo-moon-landing-hoax-theories.html

Claim and counter claim 4 Evidence for the conspiracy. One of the astronauts on the Apollo 11 mission, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, confirmed that the Apollo 11 missions were “fake” and that the videos of the mission are simply showing a setup that was created to simulate how the moon and space would look. “Apollo 11 was not real, none of it was” http://huzlers.com/buzz-aldrin-admits-apollo-11-moon-landings-fake-simply-set-see-tweet/

Claim and counter claim 4 Evidence for the moon landing. Of course, if Aldrin had really made such a confession, such a huge story would have been extensively covered by the mainstream media all over the world. http://www.hoax-slayer.com/hoax-buzz-aldrin-admits-moon-landing-fake.shtml

Judgement Which pieces of evidence do you believe or not believe? List them and give the reasons

Now it is time to make your decision: Do you believe the moon landings of 1969 were a conspiracy or really happened? Why have you come to that judgement?
