Direction

Direction All maps require direction and orientation. This is achieved by indicating North on maps. This is often done by using a compass rose - a circle showing all the cardinal and ordinal points as well as all the numeric bearings. Cardinal points are the 4 main directions, North, East, South, and West.

Direction Ordinal points are the directions in between the main 4. They include North-East and South- West and even lesser known points like North- North-East or West- South- West. All directions use letters.

Direction Bearings are a numeric direction, based on 360 degrees being North and 180 degrees being South. The use of bearings allows for very accurate directions. Bearings are found on maps and are the usual way that pilots navigate planes or boats.

Direction

Direction Fill in the blank direction master you have in your notes. Remember, North = 360 degrees. Also, each minor ordinal point is made up of the two directions that bracket it, cardinal point first. I.E. : between south and south-east there is a minor ordinal point known as south-south-east. Similarily there is a point between east and south-east that is known as east-south-east. Each directional point, cardinal or ordinal, is 22.5° apart.
