Bellwork What’s the difference between a picture and a map?

Parts of a Map Every map has at least 4 basic elements: Title Map Key/Legend Directional Indicator Scale

Title The title should tell you what the map is representing.

Map Key/Legend The Map Key (or Legend) tells you what the different symbols, colors, and lines on the map represent.

Directional Indicator The Directional Indicator tells you which direction is which. A directional indicator that has all of the cardinal and/or secondary directions on it is called a compass rose. Some directional indicators may just point North.

Scale The scale tells you how distance on the map relates to distance in the real world. Some maps use scale bars. Some maps use ratios.

Your Turn Draw a map of your neighborhood. Include: Title Map Key/Legend Directional Indicator Scale Don’t worry about getting anything exact. Just guess for now!

Bellwork Give at least 2 reasons that a title is important.

Map Titles The title of a map: Describes the area shown Identifies the map's main topic The date tells us the map shows the locations of places at a certain time.

Bell Work Draw a symbol to represent the following words: Interstate Restaurant School Hospital

Map Key/Legend The Map Key (or Legend) tells you what the different symbols, colors, and lines on the map represent.

Map Key/Legend Information on maps can be represented in one of 3 ways Point – a location that is represented by a concrete symbol Line – a location that is represented by a line that follows its path through the landscape Polygon – a location that is represented through its actual boundaries

Your Turn Add the following to your map Boundaries + 1 additional polygon feature (e.g., lake or park) 2 line features (e.g., rivers and roads) 2 point features (e.g., schools, restaurants)

Bellwork Would you rather have a car that is at a 1:1 scale or a 1:100 scale? Why?

? Map Scale Map scales allow us to measure distance on a map. This allows us to determine how close or far apart things are in the real world. ?

Your Turn Add a scale to your map. Label your scale. Is the total distance of your scale 1 mile, 10, miles, 100 miles or something else? Show the divisions for ½ distance and ¼ distance
