Today… We’ll be practicing your ability to detect persuasive elements. You will have two warm ups—one in your composition notebook and the other with me verbally and on the board. We’ll start with a review of persuasive elements from last week. After reading both articles, you’ll answer the questions at the end of this PP. Let’s get started!

Breaking Down Arguments Claim – The writers position (for or against) Support – Evidence that helps justify the position. Counter-argument – A brief argument that the “other side” is likely to rise.

Persuasive Techniques Bandwagon: “everyone’s doing it” “Plain Folks”/“Farmer Joe”: ordinary people are on your side. Testimonial: endorsement from satisfied customers or celebrities. Transfer: connects the idea/product with a positive image

Appeals Logos (logical): the evidence “makes sense” Pathos (emotional appeal): the evidence makes you feel fear, pity, or self-conscious.
