Glaciers and Glacial Landforms
 As glaciers travel over land, glacial ice can erode the underlying bedrock.  This erosion can happen by:  Plucking  Abrasion.
10.4. Erosion  Water, in either gas, liquid, or solid form can change the surface of the earth, it can even carve rock!  Erosion is the transportation.

Aim: What are Glaciers? I. Glacier – found at high altitudes and high latitudes. These are locations where more snow falls during the winter than melts.

How will all of this impact upon Fluvioglacial processes and Glacial sediment? Fluvioglacial processes Glacial sediment.
What is erosion? -Erosion is the removal of rock particles and soil from an area -Erosion requires energy (usually supplied by gravity)
Ch 15: p  Enormous masses of moving ice created by the accumulation and compaction of snow.  Powerful agents of erosion ~ have carved some.
Glaciers Glaciers formed much of the landscape that exists presently in the northern United States and elsewhere in the world. Glaciers Today, scientists.
Glaciers We wouldn’t be here without them.. A Glacier is an accumulation of snow that is large enough to survive the summer melt. These large ice masses.
GLACIATION About 15 million square kilometres of the earth’s surface are currently covered with glaciers.

Glacial Erosion and Deposition. Erosion Glaciers have the capacity to carry huge rocks and piles of debris over large distances They grind out parallel.
Guided Notes For Glaciers Section 8.3. Glaciers shape the landscape by eroding, transporting, and depositing huge volumes of rock and sediment.
Geologic Features of Glaciation
Glacial Landscapes Glacier = large moving mass of ice. Glacier = large moving mass of ice. Glaciers erode, transport and deposit massive amount of sediment.
Glaciers. Geologists define a glacier as any large mass of ice that moves slowly over land. There are two types of glaciers: Continental glaciers Valley.

Thursday, January 22, 2015 Castle Learning Week #21 Aim: Review concepts for the Earth Science Mid-Term Objective: You will review rocks, minerals, maps and surface processes for the mid-term. Do Now: List and describe several features associated with glacial activity.

Drumlin Streamlined hills of glacial till – drumlins indicate the direction of glacial movement.

Esker Deposits from rivers of glacial meltwater within/under the glacier.

Erratic Large boulders deposited randomly across a landscape.

Glacial Erosion Sediment transported by moving glaciers. Carved the landscape of the Hudson Valley; Striations, U-Shaped valleys

Kettle Hole/depression formed when a glacier remains in one spot and melts.

Outwash Deposition of sediments formed from the meltwaters of a glacier. Sediment is sorted by size, shape and density.

Striation Scratches on the bedrock from passing glaciers.
