Readiness of test stations for design validation Marta Bajko on behalf of the TE-MSC TF team CERN, 11 th December 2014 QXF design review, CERN

OUTLINE Specification for test station Present CERN Upgrades of the CERN installations – vertical – Horizontal Alternative solutions and the limitations of them My conclusions with the time line

WHEN DO WE NEED TEST OF MAGNETS? R&D TQ, SMC,HQ,RMC Modelling SQXF, MQXFA, MQXFB Prototyping Q1,Q2a,Q2b,Q3 Production Q1,Q2a,Q2b,Q3 STRING Post installation VERTICAL positionHORIZONTAL position Subject of this talkNOT Subject of this talk in LHe intermediate stage of the construction without end covers and dedicated cryostat in LHe final stage of the construction with end covers, shell as the LHe tank, and vacuum vessel Goal: Fix issues at early stage and feed back to the design without spending time and money for finishing Goal: Qualify production, serve HWC with off-line training (memory), operation with field quality

AVAILABLE TEST INSTALLATIONS CERN CRYOGENIC TEST CERN: SM18 Vertical cryostats a.LN2 1 cryostat b.LHe 2 cryostats 1.9 K 4.2 K Horizontal benches a.6 operational benches 2 occupied with experience OSQAR a.4 in (re)-commissioning i.C cluster refurbished with longer benches and all LHC type power converters, ii.A cluster refurbished with new water cooled cables and pushed to up to 14 kA

The main PARAMETERS THAT COUNTS for the test station SPECIFIOCATION - Outer diameter 630 mm [550 mm] Main parameters [LHC today] – Aperture 150 mm [70 mm] – Gradient 140 T/m [200 T/m] – Current kA [7.2 kA/12 kA] – Lengths 8.0 m/6.8 m [6.2/5.5 m] – Peak field 12.1 T [8.6/7.7 T] – 80% on the loadline [80%, 84%] – To be installed in ‘23-’24 [2008] – Temp margin  4.5 K [ K] – j overall  500 A/mm 2 [ / A/mm 2 ] – j sc  1600 A/mm 2 [ / A/mm 2 ] – 16 units needed (IR1 and IR5) plus spares [we do not touch IR2 and IR8] - Iss  22 kA [13 kA]

VERTICAL TEST: for LN 2 The test station is located outside the building, near the LN 2 tank. It consist mainly of a vertical cryostat and a “mixer” allowing to cool down the magnet in the cryostat with variable temperature between K. This test station is not equipped with electrical powering system and uses a cryostat previously used by the RF cavity test in SM18. R&D TQ, SMC,HQ,RMC Modelling SQXF, MQXFA, MQXFB Prototyping Q1,Q2a,Q2b,Q3 Production Q1,Q2a,Q2b,Q3 STRING Post installation 8.7 t, > 2 m D 1.03 m Designed for a max. gradient of  T= 100 K to qualify mechanics at cold 19 days total: 60 hours “actual” cooling to 77 K 5 days warming Long weekend Not 100 % automatic… Time can be reduced Available

VERTICAL TEST: for R&D and LHe R&D TQ, SMC,HQ,RMC Modelling SQXF, MQXFA, MQXFB Prototyping Q1,Q2a,Q2b,Q3 Production Q1,Q2a,Q2b,Q3 STRING Post installation We have two hard limitations TODAY : a.Diameter :max. 600 for 630 mm needed b.Current : max. 20 kA for kA needed Power distribution, power converter shearing NOT Available

C B A CLUSTERS F E D The upgrade of the vertical test facility: CLUSTER D Internal Note EDMS Nr: Design started

CLUSTER D: the new vertical cryostat Cryogenic connection on the side 30 kA current leads Integrated He heat exchanger Lambda plate Civil engineering work, due to the limitation of the building 5.05 m -3 m depth Cryogenic buffer and valve box Energy extraction (switch and dump for 30 kA) Power converters combination Design started CE work starts in Jan till Aug 2015

WHAT OTHER CONCERNS WE HAVE TODAY ? Service upgrade a.Cryogenic cooling (will be impossible before 2017 a good coordination will be needed) b.Water cooling (demineralised) need to be upgraded before end 2015 Planning The test station the earliest can be commissioned in Summer (the limiting items being the cryogenics installations) and the co-activities Co-activities for 2015 a.Test of R&D magnets in parallel with test of LHC spare magnets b.Design, procurement and installation of cluster D c.Feasibility study of Cluster X and horizontal test cryostat d.Installation and HWC of two other cryostats: i.HFM (option B) ii.Siegtal (800 mm diameter 1.5 m) with the same personnel

R&D TQ, SMC,HQ,RMC Modelling SQXF, MQXFA, MQXFB Prototyping Q1,Q2a,Q2b,Q3 Production Q1,Q2a,Q2b,Q3 STRING Post installation HORIZONTAL TEST: for Modelling and LHe We have two hard limitations TODAY : a.Current : max. 17 kA for kA needed b.Corrector powering 600 A for 4 kA needed

C B A CLUSTERS F E D The upgrade of the vertical test facility: CLUSTER X Internal Note EDMS Nr: Feasibility study on going

C1 B2 Connection to magnet with 30 kA warm Current leads for 30 kA Extra length of water cooled cables New CFU (30 and 4 kA) Reduction of nr of benches cold 2 Connection cryostats Modification of CFU ( 4 kA) Keeping existing nr of benches IDEAS THAT WE ARE EXPLORING Re-directionning with bus bars the 15 kA from B2 to C1 Feasibility study on going

OPTION B: vertical HFM cryostat Planning: Last components (cryo transfer lines and valve box) delivery announced today for October HWC not before February 2016, operation April Limited the test to 20 kA OPTION B: horizontal cluster A Planning: The minimum needed modification is for the 4 kA corrector circuit powering implying new design of current leads and integration in the existing CFU), operational end 2016 Limited the test to 17 kA ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS

EVOLUTION OF THE TEST STATION AS PLANNED TODAY

MY CONCLUSIONS R&D TQ, SMC,HQ,RMC Modelling SQXF, MQXFA, MQXFB Prototyping Q1,Q2a,Q2b,Q3 Production Q1,Q2a,Q2b,Q3 STRING Post installation VERTICAL positionHORIZONTAL position Subject of this talkNOT Subject of this talk Outer D 630 mm Iss MQXFS,MQXFA  22 kA Lss  4 m 2014 : K, 570 mm for 4 m Iss MQXFA, MQXFB  22 kA I MCBXF = 4 kA Lss  15 m Summer 2016 : K, 800 mm for 5 m (alternative HFM cryostat: but 20 kA in April 2016) March 2017 : 30 kA K (alternative Cluster A: but only 17 kA K in 2015) NO vertical test facility is CERN,nor planned for the individual test of MQXFB…. 6.8 m !! For HQ, SMC, RMC For MQXS, MQXFA For Q1,Q2a,Q2b,Q3 Short or no time for feed back from model to the prototype with CERN installations Very tight ! CRITICAL Seems to be feasible

Cluster D dismounting A standard Cluster The dismounted Cold Feeding Unit Space ready for civil engineering with protection Where we are today? Civil engineering starts in January 2015 with planned end in August 2015 Show stopper seems to be: a.Cryogenics b.Energy extraction
