Originally created by J. Kinley B. C. ------- B.C.E. Before Christ Gregorian Calendar You must denote B.C. or B.C.E. time Before Common Era The Gregorian calendar is the calendar that is used nearly everywhere in the world. A modification of the Julian calendar, it was first proposed by the Calabrian doctor Aloysius Lilius, and was decreed by Pope Gregory XIII, for whom it was named, on 24 February 1582 via the papal bull Inter gravissimas. Its years are numbered per the perceived birth year of Jesus Christ, which is labeled the "anno Domini" era. This era was created in the 6th century by Roman monk Dionysius Exiguus. The Gregorian Calendar was devised both because the mean year in the Julian Calendar was slightly too long, causing the vernal equinox to slowly drift backwards in the calendar year, and because the lunar calendar used to compute the date of Easter had grown conspicuously in error as well. Originally created by J. Kinley A. D. --------C.E. Anno Domini which is Latin for in the year of the Lord If the dates have no letters it is A.D. Or C.E. time Common Era Originally created by J. Kinley

Originally created by J. Kinley Centuries A measure of time that is derived from the Latin term cent or one hundred 100 consecutive years. Are one number ahead of actual date 1-100 401-500 1901-2000 Originally created by J. Kinley

Timelines ----------I--------- BC AD Dates are like a timeline with positive and negative numbers B.C. or B.C.E. are like negative numbers Originally created by J. Kinley

Originally created by J. Kinley Timelines Continued The larger the B.C. date the earlier or the older the year The larger the A.D. date the later or the younger the year Originally created by J. Kinley

Calculating Elapsed Time Between Dates If the dates are both B.C or both A.D., then subtract the numbers If one date is B.C. and the other A.D., then add the numbers 2000-----500----I----500-----2000 BC AD Originally created by J. Kinley
