Agenda America is in the Heart Reading Journal 2

America is in the Heart Part One: 3-93 Part Two: Part Three: Part Four: Finish up to the end of Part Three by Tuesday Reading Journal 2

America is in the Heart Why did the narrator stop going to school for the first time? 49 What is the narrator’s opinion of his life as a peasant pgs. 38,65 What is Allos’ fathers opinion of education? Pg22 What motivate Allo’s to leave his home and his family behind? Pg Why was Macario the only one able to finish school? Pg. 15 Is there a similarity when the narrator is told that something precious was lost? Pg 51 Does the sibbed represent the narrator? Is the sibbed a metaphor for the narrator? How is the story of the sibbed an allegory for the story of the narrator and of other Filipinos who came to the US during the period the Great Depression?

America is in the Heart Today we will continue to establish context for Part Two by considering how the story continues beyond Formation of the United Farmworkers Trailer for The Delano Manongs Post-Civil Rights Movement: Citizenship becomes the means for dividing the working class. Deportation rapidly increases after Oaxaca in California Similarities? Differences?

America is in the Heart Now –Threat of deportation, vastly expanded border enforcement. –Widespread opposition to some forms of discrimination. Discrimination based on citizenship, not on race. –Families, family-based migration. –Weaker labor movement. –Expansion of Asian, Latino middle classes.

Reading Journal 2 Select a short scene from Part I or Part II that stands out for you. The scene should involve the actions of characters in the novel. The scene should not be one of the philosophical interludes. The scene should be short because you will type it into your journal entry. Use an MLA block- quotation format. The page number should appear in parentheses after the quotation.

Reading Journal 2 In a separate paragraph explain why the scene is significant. Why highlight this scene? How does the scene point to broad issues or problems? How do you relate to the scene?

Homework Do the reading journal over the weekend. Finish America is in the Heart before Thursday. We will discuss Part Two and Part Three on Tuesday, and I will give you the description for the summary assignment.
