An example of how we can use GUIDED READING RESOURCES in a Classroom setting

 There are a number of excellent Internet sites that provide YOU with ready made and or easy adjusted literacy resources for class teachers to use.  One such website is from Jane Farrall. Jane is a Speech Pathologist and consultant   Jane has been working in the disability and assistive technology field for over 20 years. She has extensive practical experience in both Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and in teaching children and adults with disabilities to acquire literacy.  Jane uses the Four Blocks Program

 It is worth your time to google search ‘Jane Farrall’ as she provides lots of practical information for you to use in relation to Guided Reading within your classrooms.  Once you go onto this site - you will find a small number of books with a range of resources to download.

 Jane also provides a written Literacy plan for the week which includes the four areas of literacy including;  Guided Reading  Writing Tasks  Self Selected Reading  Working with Words  Here is an example of a SIMPLE program that can be easily followed or adapted to suit a student or a class group.  Many of our classes have used these literacy plans but have adapted them to suit the needs and ability of their students.

 Here is an example of a teacher adapting a literacy plan for their class. They used Jane Farrall’s outline as a basis. In the classroom:  The teacher would read the book each day.  They would then carry out a task from each of the four areas shown everyday.  It was a daily program for the class. Guided Reading Purposes: 1.Background knowledge - what do we know about emus? Picture walk Read story 2.Read to find out what animals the emu tries to be.. 3.Read to decide how the other animals feel when the emu joins them. 4. Read to decide why the emu wanted to be a different animal. 5. Read to find out how the emu felt when he got back to his cage.. Self selected Reading Resources:  Storyline online  Class books  Meegenius  Youtube books  Magazines  Tarheel Readers Extension activities Writing Tasks: 1. Write a story about an animal or your pet. 2. Write a story about what you would like to be if you could become something else Working with Words: Word Wall words: revision Other tasks: Phonics: ‘M’
