Patterns and Texture Creating Visual Interest

Patterns in Art What is a pattern? In art, a pattern is a repetition of specific visual elements. We subconsciously enjoy looking at patterns because they embody a sense of harmony.

Art Patterns Around the World Patterns in art appear in many art forms around the world, from the detailed geometric Islamic motifs to the symmetrical patterns on woven Najavo blankets to the contemporary art designs. Every culture has its own distinct set of folk patterns that appear on textiles, architecture, manuscripts, masks, and other objects.

Contemporary Art Patterns in contemporary art can add a strong element of interest to a painting, drawing or mixed media piece. In many cases, patterns form the main element of interest in a composition.

In the painting, which pattern stands out the most? You'll probably agree that the black and white pattern snaking through the composition looks really bold compared to the multi-colored patterns. Another thing to consider when making patterns in art: do you want certain patterns to stand out more than others, and if so, how can you do that?

Use patterns to create a background, visual interest and borders.

Texture in Art What is texture? Texture refers to the way an object feels or appears to feel.

By using patterns you can create a sense of texture in art as shown in this Klimt example.

Zentangle Designs A fun way to start experimenting with patterns and texture through line designs is by creating Zentangle art. What is Zentangle? The Zentangle Method is creating images by drawing structured patterns.

Zentangle art is using free flowing abstract forms and filling in the outline shapes to create interesting textures.

Getting Started Create pattern squares by drawing different design and texture ideas in each box. You can refer to the boxes when you need ideas to fill a space.

Practice in Sketchbook On a blank page in your sketchbook, divide it into several squares. You will need a minimum of 10 squares but more is always better. Using Sharpie or pencil, begin drawing patterns in each box. Want to make it more of a challenge? Try not to replicate any pattern ideas from other students at your table.
