Networking: Applications and Services Antonia Ghiselli, INFN Stu Loken, LBNL Chairs

Overview The network is still critical for HENP Many applications are designed to use the network New techniques are emerging to measure performance There emerges an “operating system” for the network

The Network Services View Resource-specific implementations of basic services: E.g., Transport protocols, name servers, differentiated services, CPU schedulers, public key infrastructure, site accounting, directory service, OS bypass Resource-independent and application-independent services: E.g., authentication, authorization, resource location, resource allocation, events, accounting, remote data access, information, policy, fault detection Distributed Computing Applications Toolkit Network Layer Middleware Data- Intensive Applications Toolkit Collaborative Applications Toolkit Remote Visualization Applications Toolkit Problem Solving Applications Toolkit Remote Instrumentation Applications Toolkit Chemistry Biology ion Data Analysis Applications Application Toolkits

Applications Monitoring and Managing Distributed Processes Objectivity/AMS on Wide Area Network Remote control of experiment using QoS Radiotherapy with remote consulting

Tools Next Generation of Virtual Room Videoconferencing System Voice over IP Video Conferencing on PC Web-based source code navigator FreeHEP library for code of community interest CERN Web services architecture (logical URL)

Middleware or Common Services CORBA used as framework for building applications Condor used to provide high-throughput computing Grid Services being integrated into testbeds and large-scale computational systems

Network Layer Mostly built on commodity networks Some very high-speed examples such as Gigabit System Network (GSN) New tools for traffic measurement and analysis

Special Issues Security –Protect resources and still allow access –Good system management as well as strong authentication Quality of Service –Differentiated Services in addition to “best effort” –QoS is critical for some tools and applications

Conclusion Network continues to be a critical service We are seeing an evolution to higher level services
