Basic Background Georgia statistics (From WHO, 2012) Distribution of years of lives lost – Noncommunicable- 75% – Communicable – 15% – Injury 10% Adult Risk Factors – Increased blood glucose Male- 11.9%/ Female- 11.1% – Raised blood pressure Male- 42.6%/ Female- 34.3% – Obesity Male- 15.9%/ Female- 25.7% – Tobacco Male- 57%/ female- 6% (probably higher)
Objective To screen Faculty, Staff and Graduate level students for basic nutritional status and other factors related to nutrition intake To identify areas of potential health promotion and further study
Methods Utilized the Nutrition Screening Initiative – Short questionnaire with simple questions – History of repeated use in different populations – Easy to translate into Georgian Questionnaire was placed on UG intranet and popped up when person logged in. Was posted for anyone who logged in for 2 days – Including all levels of students, faculty and staff
Nutritional Screening Initiative 1.I have an illness or condition that made me change the kind and/or amount of food I eat 2.I eat fewer than 2 meals per day 3.I eat few fruits and vegetables 4.I eat few milk products 5.I have 3 or more drinks of beer, liquor or wine almost every day 6.I have tooth or mouth problems that make it hard for me to eat 7.I eat alone most of the time 8.I take 3 or more different prescribed or over the counter drugs a day 9.Without wanting to, I have lost or gained 10 kilograms in the last 6 months 10.I am not always physically able to shop, cook and or feed myself
Nutritional Screening Initiative Score – 0-2 Good! Recheck in 6 months – 3-5 Moderate nutritional risk. Recheck in 3 months – 6 or more High nutritional risk
