Jisc Monitor: Updates on Developments Dr Frank Manista Senior Open Access Support Coordinator Monitor Local and Monitor UK Photo by Kate Ter Haar CC-BY APC Payment Management: In Practice and Good Practice 18 November 2015

Jisc Monitor Suite: Local Open Access Tracking with UK-Wide Benefits » Completed in June 2015 » Inputs from over 60 UK institutions » The pilot examined how institutions (and the broader support chain) might support and track Open Access publications processes, especially compliance and costs monitoring » Jisc has committed to developing two related applications within its OA offer, potentially to be released in Summer

The Challenge » The Monitor business case recognised that institutions are addressing the same problem in a variety of ways › Spreadsheets › Tailoring generic systems (such as a CRM) › Building their own solution › Working with suppliers to add to CRIS or Repository functionality 3

Monitor local: OA tracking and reporting » Record and report on data relating to OA publications within institutions » Supports ‘Gold’ and ‘Green’ publication routes » Range of coverage and flexibility › Any phase of publication › Any type of output › Any level of detail › Any author 4 Jon Hathaway:

Monitor Local Benefits » UK specific focus » Automation of data collection and validation wherever possible » Especially for publication record enhancement and compliance checking » Will be compliant with open standards for data exchange and exploit data from global and UK services such as › CORE › CrossRef › “How Open Is It?” › KB+ › SHERPA › Potentially Publications Router and SHARE 5

Monitor UK: data aggregation › An application that aggregates and presents data analytics › Enables institutions to share and learn from cost and compliance data relating to their Open Access publications by the ‘Gold’ route › Provides new and convenient ways to access and use the data and a level of business intelligence not otherwise available › Will run in the cloud for appropriate security 6

Monitor UK Benefits » The benefits will be of interest in a number of contexts: › Institutions › Jisc Collections › Funders › Monitor UK will be compliant with established profiles for data exchange (notably RIOXX) and will map incoming data to standard names (notably publishers and funders) 7

Monitor UK Flexibility » Participating institutions are able to supply data from a variety of alternative sources, depending on their local practices and systems: › From Monitor Local › From an alternative system › From a spreadsheet › access-activity access-activity 8

Pilot participation Tier 1 Review Participate in workshops and webinars to shape Monitor workflows and integration with other services Benefit from sharing of ideas and dialogue to test and enhance your local plans Tier 2 Evaluate Access the demo platform to assess and comment on either / both systems based on a test data set Contribute to specification of reports and exports Tier 3 Trial Use a secure Monitor Local institution account to build up real institutional data with option to transfer it to the full service and / or Use data from other institutional applications to populate the UK aggregation via spreadsheet or API 9
