Natural Resources The Earth’s atmosphere, waters, and solid crust provide almost everything we need to survive.

Natural Resources Humans have found ways to survive by using natural resources to change their immediate surroundings.

Natural Resources A natural resource is any natural substance, organism, or energy form that living things use.

Natural Resources Most resources are made into products that make people’s lives more comfortable and convenient.

Lumber This pile of lumber is made of wood, which comes from trees. What are some things you would use lumber for?

Gasoline The gasoline in this can is made from oil pumped from the Earth’s crust. What would you use this gasoline for?

Electricity Electricity generated by these wind turbines ultimately comes from the sun’s energy. What would you use electricity for?

Renewable Resources A renewable resource is a natural resource that can be used and replaced over a relatively short time.

Renewable Resources Fresh water, fish, and trees are just a few of the renewable resources available on Earth. Can you think of any other renewable resources?

Nonrenewable Resources A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be replaced or can be replaced only over thousands or millions of years.

Nonrenewable Resources Coal, natural gas, and iron ore, can be replaced only over thousands or millions of years once they are used up. Can you think of any other nonrenewable resources?

Conserving Natural Resources Whether the natural resources are renewable or nonrenewable, we should be careful about how we use them. We should try to only use them when necessary. What are some ways you can conserve natural resources?

Recycling Recycling is the use of used or discarded materials that have been reprocessed into new products.

Recycling Recycling can reduce the amount of natural resources that must be obtained from the Earth.

Objectives Title: Natural Resources Standard:6.b.Students know different natural energy and material resources, including air, soil, rocks, minerals, petroleum, fresh water, wildlife, and forests, and know how to classify them as renewable or nonrenewable. Objectives Determine how humans use natural resources. Contrast renewable resources with nonrenewable resources. Explain how humans can conserve natural resources.
