Chapter 6 - Future Challenges ME101 Dr. Nhut Tan Ho

Lecture Objectives and Activities Discuss future challenges and opportunities for mechanical engineering Active learning activities group-assignment: new curriculum for meeting the future challenges

6.1 Expanding World Population , world population climbs from 1.6 billion to 6 billion people Places new stress on conservation of resources, and gives engineers new challenges to compensate for high population

6.2 Pollution Engineers concerned with management and the control of pollution, especially: Air pollution Water pollution and the depletion of freshwater resources Management of solid waste

6.3 Energy It is predicted that energy usage in the Developing Countries will more than double in the next 30 years Engineers must find new ways to generate power in an effort to conserve natural resources (fossil fuels)

6.5 Infrastructure With mass transportation an ever- present problem, engineers will be responsible in the future for designing and maintaining a system by which the transportation of raw materials, as well as the human capital that process them, can easily and efficiently move from place to place

Group Activity Form a group of 4 Brainstorm and discuss the issues presented. Consider what new Engineering solutions and technologies University majors, programs, course might evolve during the next 20 years in an attempt to meet these future challenges Present your results to the class

Lecture Recap: Future Challenges Next generation of engineers will be responsible for more developments than all technological developments in the past. Many issues and challenges to be addressed Next lecture: Teamwork skills Homework Q & A
