What Are Natural Resources?

What resources do trees need to survive?

Natural Resources  Some natural resources, such as water and air are used again and again! These are called renewable resources!

Renewable Resources  Natural resources that CAN BE replaced!  Challenge: Take about 3 minutes to create a list of renewable resources in your table groups.  Check: Could any of the natural resources you listed be permanently used up?

Nonrenewable Resources  Natural resources that CANNOT be replaced easily.  Challenge: On the same sheet as your renewable resources, brainstorm with your group 3 different nonrenewable resources. Oil is found deep underground. It is pumped to the surface and then refined before it can be used.

From Coast to Coast  Let’s think about the resources we have here in Justin, TX.  Do we have resources here that other parts of the world don’t have?  Do other states/countries have resources that we don’t have here in Texas?  Take a look at page 297!

Green Energy  Energy that generated by using renewable resources.  Why might using green energy in homes be a good alternative to fossil fuels?

Flowing Down Slope  What are all the different ways we can use water as a renewable resource?  Take a look at page 298! Water from 31 states drains into the Mississippi River. It also supplies drinking water for 50 cities! This is one of the world’s largest watersheds!

A Day Without Water  Take a look at page 299 and complete A Day Without Water checklist!  Why do you think some goods are transported using the Mississippi River and not on highways?

Let’s Conserve!  Conservation is the use of less of something to make its supply last longer. It also means preserving the natural condition of the environment.  What can we do to protect and conserve our natural resources?

Reflection 1. Why is it important for people to make informed choices in the conservation of Earth’s natural resources? 2. Why do you think it might be important to keep Earth’s air, water, and soil free from pollutants? 3. What are some effects of reusing and recycling items instead of discarding them as garbage?
