Problems for discussion: Definition of the phoneme and its functions The system of English phonemes Types of allophones and main features of the phoneme

Key-words: phoneme, morphemes ,constitutive function, recognitive function, distinctive function., allophone, consonants, vowels.

The phoneme has three functions 1. constitutive function 2. recognitive function 3. distinctive function

bath-path, light-like. He was heard badly - He was hurt badly.

The phoneme can be studied in two ways as independent sound [t] [d], e.g. bride [braid] – bright [brait] as a variant of a sound, e.g. Let us – Let them

The allophones which do not undergo any distinguishable changes in speech are called principal. door – dawn. Allophones that occur under influence of the neighboring sounds in different phonetic situations are called subsidiary

"subsidiary allophones".  deal – day – did   [d] is slightly palatalized  bedtime – bad pain –good dog [d] is pronounced without any plosion  sudden – admit – couldn’t [d] is pronounced with nasal plosion

The system of English phonemes are called consonants and vowels.

The difference is in different work of organs of speech. Consonants are pronounced with noise and voice combined, In the case of consonants different obstructions are made. Vowels are pronounced with voice only. In the case of vowels no obstruction is made.
