Aim: What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources?

Non-Renewable Resources/ Recursos no Renovables Cannot be replenished by natural processes. Once we use them, they're gone FOREVER. Finite = limited Finitos= limitados

What are some examples of nonrenewable resources? Fossil Fuels- from the remains of organisms that lived millions of years ago Coal Oil Natural gas Los combustibles fósiles-restos de organismos que vivieron hacen millones de años. gas natural Petroleo Carbón

What will happen in the future if we keep on using our non-renewable resources? We will run out of them because there is a finite amount of them. Once they are gone, they’re gone.

Renewable Resources/ Recursos Renovables Replaceable Items that will keep coming back as long as we treat them properly. Ex. when we cut down trees for paper, we can replant new trees & get more paper.

What will happen in the future if we use our renewable resources without replacing them? If they are not replaced as fast as they are used we will run out of them. Si no son remplazados se terminan.

World Fish Catch World Fish Catch per Person Total Catch (million tons) Section 6-2 Over Fishing/ Pescar demasiado Go to Section: According to the graph, how will the fish population be affected by human impact due to over fishing?

Alternative Energy Sources: Recursos Energeticos Alternativos: Hydroelectricity Wind Power Solar Energy Nuclear Energy Hidroelectricidad Viento Energia Solar Energia Nuclear

dammed water is sent through a turbine & generates electricity. (El agua de presa pasa por una turbina y genera electricidad) Advantages/ Ventajas) 1)Little or no air pollution 2)Does not depend on fossil fuels Poca contaminacion No depende de combustibles de fosiles Disadvantages/ Desventajas 1)Disruptive to surrounding aquatic ecosystems. (Altera los ecosistemas acuaticos) Hydroelectricity/ Hidroelectrico

Wind Power/ Viento wind spins turbine blades to produce electricity. (El viento mueve turbinas para producir electricidad) Advantages: Ventajas 1)Little or no pollution (Poca contaminacion) 2)Does not require the consumption of water to operate. No requiere el uso de agua) Disadvantages: Desventajas 1)The intermittency of wind (el viento es intermitente) 2)Need a lot of turbines to generate as much energy of one fossil fuel power plant. (Se necesitan muchas turbinas para generar enegia)

Solar Energy/ Energia Solar the use of the sun’s energy to generate electricity. (Baja contaminacion) 2)Technology is becoming more affordable. (No es tan costoso) Disadvantages/ desventajas 1)Not available at night & reduced during cloud cover.(No esta disponible en la noches o cuando esta nublado)

Nuclear Energy/ Energia Nuclear energy produced from the splitting of atoms. (energia producida al dividir un atomo). Advantages: ventajas 1)Water vapor is the only emission. (Vapor de agua es la unica emission) 2) Low fuel costs (uranium).(Costo bajo del combustible (uranio) Disadvantages: Desventajas 1)Waste is radioactive & must be properly contained for thousands of years.

Energy Conservation: Conservacion de Energia We need to conserve energy by reducing our usage of everyday products we have come to rely on. Ex: Turn off lights when not in use, Carpooling, Use fan instead of air conditioner, etc…
