Mechanical Engineering Nickolas Morin Intro to engineering and design 4th period

Job Description Mechanical engineers provide efficient solutions to the development of processes and products, ranging from small component designs to extremely large plant, machinery or vehicles. •manufacturing; •power; •construction; •medical

Skills And Characteristics Complex Problem Solving Critical Thinking Judgment and Decision Making Mathematics Active Listening Reading Comprehension Science

Required Training Mechanical engineers utilize scientific and mathematic principles to devise technical solutions for problems in construction, engine design and manufacturing. Aspiring mechanical engineers must earn a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at minimum, and many pursue graduate degrees in the field. Every state requires that mechanical engineers earn licensure, which calls for education, supervised work experience and several examinations. Required Education Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering Licensing Professional Engineer license required Projected Job Growth (2012-2022)* 5% Mean Salary (2013)* $85,930

Typical Wages According to the BLS, mechanical engineers earned a median salary of $82,100 in 2013. The best-paid earned about $123,340, while the lowest-paid earned less than $52,550. With an average salary of $85,930 in 2013, mechanical engineers are filling their coffers at a higher rate than a number of other technology jobs. Computer programmers, by comparison, make $80,930. The gap is wider for computer support specialists, who earn an average annual salary of $64,160. Still, some technology jobs, like information security analysts ($91,210) and IT managers ($132,570), earn more than mechanical engineers.

Job Outlook Employment of civil engineers is projected to grow 20 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. As infrastructure continues to age, civil engineers will be needed to manage projects to rebuild bridges, repair roads, and upgrade levees and dams. Moreover, a growing population means that new water systems will be required while the aging, existing water systems must be maintained to reduce or eliminate leaks of drinkable water. In addition, more waste treatment plants will be needed to help clean the nation’s waterways. Civil engineers play a key part in all of this work.

Professional Association American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME): With shrewd attention to standards and regulation, this professional organization for mechanical engineers sets the codes and standards for mechanical devices to ensure quality and safety.
