African-American Face Jug African slaves were brought to the Caribbean where they picked up the religion of Voodoo. When they were brought to America many converted to Christianity. Face jugs are a result of a mix of the two religions and the African tradition of ancestor worship.

Some slaves were not allowed to have tombstones when they were buried. Personal items and Pottery (like Face Jugs) were placed to mark the graves. The ugly faces on the jugs were intended to scare away the devil so that he would not get the spirit of the dead person and they could go to heaven. http://www.blackpotter.com/

North Carolina Face Jugs Burlon B. Craig began making pottery in 1928 and continued until his death in 2002. He kept the tradition of face jugs as well as other Catawba valley pottery from becoming extinct. In NC face jugs gained popularity during Prohibition. The ugly faces were meant to keep children out of the whisky.

All of his pottery was fired in his groundhog kiln. B.B. Craig worked on his pottery all his life (except during his time fighting in WWII) and held a full time job. All of his pottery was fired in his groundhog kiln. His work became so popular that by the 1980’s people came to his kiln openings and drew numbers to get a turn to by a piece of his work. (carolinaarts.com) His two sons continue his traditions at the homestead to this day. http://www.burloncraigpotteryfestival.com/
