Chapter 5 Tribal communities and colonization There were many tribal groups in India. They had a distinct culture of their own. Example Mundas, Santhals and Gonds and Khonds, Khasis and Nagas.

The tribals were totally dependent on the forest. Main activities like Hunting-gathering, herding-rearing They gathered forest products, hunted animals and practiced shifting cultivation.(The tribal select a patch of land and cleared it by cutting down the trees and burning them.) .

HOW DID BRITISH RULE AFFECT THE TRIBALS? Tribals dispossessed of their land High revenue demand Changes in forest laws. Role of traders and moneylenders. Role of Christian missionaries Tribal chiefs. As a result many tribal revolt took place.
