Outcome 4 Provide aftercare advice Self-tanning Outcome 4 Provide aftercare advice

Learning objectives Identify the aftercare advice following self-tanning treatment State further recommendations to be given to clients following treatment Describe how the effectiveness of the treatment can be evaluated Level 3 Beauty Therapy

Aftercare advice The following advice should be made clear to the client immediately after treatment. Wear loose dark clothes as there may be a possibility of staining to fabric. Avoid touching the skin. Avoid water and keep the skin dry. Do not use any products over the tan while it is developing. Leave the tan to develop for the amount of time specified. Do not undertake any activities that will cause sweating. Level 3 Beauty Therapy

Further recommendations After the tan has developed make further recommendations. Wash off the residue or guide colour using warm water only. Avoid swimming pools and heat treatments as chlorine will strip the colour and induce fading. Avoid the use of products that contain alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) as they will remove the tan colour. Moisturise the skin to stop it from becoming dry and becoming patchy when fading. Use tan enhancers to promote longevity of treatment. Exfoliate after five to seven days to ensure the tan fades evenly and to prepare the skin for the next tan treatment. Book in for further tanning treatments. Level 3 Beauty Therapy

Evaluating treatment outcomes Evaluating treatment effectiveness can be done in a number of different ways. Visual: Take before and after photos. You and your client can then refer back to these to see the difference in colour. Written feedback: Utilise your client record cards to make written notes on the changes you and your client can see. Verbal: Discuss with your client what changes family and friends have noticed. Family and friends are likely to notice the difference in skin colour. If it is a subtle tan people will say the client looks ‘very well’ and ‘glowing’. Level 3 Beauty Therapy
