World War I Weapons

Bolt-Action Rifle  The bolt-action rifle was carried by all British soldiers  It was possible to fire up to 15 rounds per minute and kill someone 1400 meters away.

Machine Guns  It was necessary for four to six men to have to man machine guns in  During this time machine guns could fire up to 400 rounds per minute and had the fire power of 100 guns.

Artillery  Term used to describe large- caliber mounted field guns.  The stalemate during the war meant that it was necessary to use long-range weapons.  It was necessary for crews of up to 12 men to work these weapons, with shells weighing up to 900 lbs.

Chlorine  German army was first to use chlorine in  Creates a smoke screen, with a distinctive smell, that leads to chest pains, and a burning in the throat.  Urine-Soaked cotton pads neutralized chlorine.

Mustard Gas  Most deadly biological weapon used in the trenches.  Odorless, took 12 hours to take effect, remained active for weeks once it landed in the soil.  Created blisters on the skin, sore eyes, and vomiting.  Would lead to a long and painful death.

War Machines  Zeppelin (Blimp)  Used for air raids, carried bombs and machine guns.  Abandoned because they were an easy target. Tanks * Use began due to rough terrain. * Maximum speed of first tank was 3 MPH and it could not cross trenches.
