EXPANSION IN THE WEST

WHERE IS THE WEST?

ECONOMY OF THE WEST Economy of the west was mixed Farming of grains (wheat) was common Exploration and trade of new resources Life was much more difficult Focus on just surviving in the wilderness

EXPANSION Lewis and Clark explored the Louisiana territory to find a water route from St. Louis, Missouri (gateway to the West)to the Pacific Ocean Other explorers (like Zebulon Pike) explored the Southwest and Rocky Mountains even when they did not belong to the United States

DISCUSSION Why would people be willing to move West? What would be some of the major difficulties in living in the West?

INNOVATIONS Expanding the nation made it necessary to make it easier to get people and information west Steamboats: Ships powered by steam, allowed for people to trade goods much easier on rivers (Mississippi, Ohio, and Missouri Rivers) Telegraph: device that transfers information long distances, allowed people to transfer information across the country quicker

REACHING THE WEST Fact: The west was massive and hard to navigate Solution: Create internal improvements (transportation) to make this easier (American System) Erie Canal: man made water way from Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes through New York National Road: government built road from Maryland to Illinois Railroads began to sprout up and would eventually make transportation much easier

LIFE IN THE WEST As your character continues their travels, they find themselves in the West. Using what we discussed today, write the final diary entry, being sure to include what we discussed today and the answers to the following questions. 1.What was your reaction the first time you saw a steamboat moving down the river? 2.What method did you use to get west? (National Road, Erie Canal, or Railroads) 3.How is life in the West than the other regions you have visited?

REFLECTION Now that you know all of the differences between the regions, which region do you predict will be the most successful? Why?
