Summary  Are Managers Considered Leaders?  Measuring Leadership  Importance of Followers

Are Mangers Considered Leaders? Leaders 1.Creating change 2.Focus on the environment outside the organization 3.Must be effective 4.Look to the future 5.Create reinforcing systems Managers 1.Make the change work 2.Uses the inputs from the external forces and translate them internally 3.Must be efficient 4.Focus on the present 5.Reinforcing individuals for their behavior

Measures of a leader  Momentum  Commitment  Initiative  Reciprocity

Momentum 1.Mass – The amount of followers responding to the leader 2.Velocity – The amount of time it takes for a response the willingness to be led 3.Direction – The direction the followers take it The clarity of communication

Commitment 4.Vision – Maintain a clear focus over time 5.Values – Ethical Behavior 6.Persistence – Continual, forceful action in the direction of the goal

Initiative 7.Teamwork – Cooperation amongst employees 8.Interfaces – Eliminate boundaries between units 9.Innovation – Suggestions of improvement show commitment to the leader’s goals

Reciprocity 10. Trust – confession to fault or failure 11. Respect – Reinforce rather than punish 12. Growth – Develop and teach followers

As a Leader you Must....  Get more out of the followers than followers have to give  Receive commitment from all of the followers  Reinforce and show support to followers to eliminate competition  Develop a respect with your followers

Conclusion  Leaders and mangers have different tasks  Using Momentum, Commitment, Initiative and Reciprocity to measure the success of your leadership  Follower behavior not leader behavior defines leadership
