Moodle Lesson Stanisław Waberski, CKU Siedlce Kaunas, 30 March 2011

A lesson is one of the many possibilities offered in the Moodle platform and it will be presented on the basis of the experience of the Centre for Continuing Education (CKU) in Siedlce

CKU in Siedlce is an educational institution for adults, that is people being over 18. The school consists from a secondary school, a supplementary general secondary school as well as vocational schools (supplementary secondary and post- secondary) offering qualifications such as administration specialist, economy specialist, hotel industry specialist, forwarder, computer specialist, office specialist.

A part of the classes for post secondary groups are held on the Moodle platform, which makes education simpler for the people living far from school, working either abroad or in the country.

Before Moodle was introduced into CKU as a teaching tool, the teachers had taken part in the course entitled E-learning as a solution for the problems of lifelong learning.

A lesson is used to provide students with the new information in the way similar to the traditional one, allowing them to connect theoretical information with practical exercises. At the same time it gives students a possibility of self-control.

At the slides to follow an example of a lesson will be shown on the basis of the subject of IT management in hotel industry specialisation. Let’s start from creating the activity in Moodle.

In order to create a lesson, select Lesson from a drop down menu Add an activity

In the appearing creator write the lesson subject and set its parameters

Lesson parameters If the aim of the lesson is to present a new material, set it as a training lesson. In case student’s answers are wrong, he/she is sent back in the lesson for a review of content pages and another attempt to answer the questions. A Moodle lesson can be protected by a password and we share it in an appropriate time.

After setting the lesson parameters click Save and display

Inserting content In the editor a window with the lesson subject and, among others, a question What do you want to do first? will appear. Since a Moodle lesson consists of the so called pages, which are available after choosing Add a Branch Table, we select it (see the next slide).

Choose Add a Branch Table option

In the next window write the title of the page and insert its content.

Create navigation buttons which allow to proceed to the next page, retreat to the previous page or finish the lesson. Here insert the name of the button choose the kind of button

Now insert a page by selecting Add a Branch Table option

Then we can add the next page with content

We will illustrate the content of this page with an image. In order to insert it click this button.

A dialog window appears, where by clicking Browse we can find and select the image file to be sent from our computer to Moodle.

Type in the image name

This is the page with the inserted image.

Now we can add a page with a question that will help to check students’ knowledge

Choose the kind of question. In case of a multiple choice question click here.

Next insert the name of question and its content.

One by one insert the possible answers. Comments, such as Congratulations! Correct answer :) Here we decide to which page refer the student after receiving his/her answer.

Using Branch Table we can give students tasks to do, as illustrated by the example below (filling in a form).

To enable students to submit their homework to be marked choose Assignments – Upload a file from the drop down menu Add an activity

A lesson can be edited at every stage. Moreover, before applying it, the lesson can be put through a test mode, after switching the teacher - student roles. This presentation shows only basic possibilities of a lesson. So, using it we can submit new information, insert images, check students’ knowledge, give homework. I would like to encourage all of you interested in it to familiarize with its details.

Thank you for your attention.
