Culture and Conflict A Global Culture

Cultural Conflict: Economic and Political Roots Increase in Supranational organizations: Multi- national political communities, wherein power is transferred or delegated to an authority by governments of member states.

International Unions The United Nations (UN): an international organization whose stated aims are facilitating cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights, and achievement of world peace. Formed in 1945, following WW2.

International Unions North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO): Intergovernmental military alliance acting as a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by any external party. Originally formed in 1949.

International Unions North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA): An agreement signed by the governments of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, creating a trilateral trade bloc in North America. The purpose is to eliminate tariffs.

International Unions The European Union (EU): an economic and political union of 27 member states which are located primarily in Europe. It ensures the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital, enacts legislation in justice and home affairs, and maintains common policies on trade, agriculture, fisheries and regional development.

International Unions G20: a group of finance ministers and central bank governors from 20 major economies. G8: created by France in 1975, for the governments of six major economies: France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In 1976, Canada joined the group (thus creating the G7). In 1997, the group added Russia, thus becoming the G8.

International Unions

Increased Interconnection With interconnected economies and political systems, comes the creation of a common culture. Large corporations face fewer restrictions and spread across the world.

Global Culture With large corporations having such power, there is the theory that nation-states have become powerless. Corporations influence economies and the cultures they occupy.

Global Culture Some argue that modernization/globalization is removing unique aspects of cultures. They would say that all cities and cultures are becoming extremely similar.

Global Culture: New York vs. Tokyo
