Presentation transcript:

BIOFUELS & ETHANOL Using Biofuels are forms of renewable energy for transportation. Biofuels are gas or liquid fuels made from plant material. Examples include ethanol, biodiesel and gasohol (90% gas and 10% ethanol). However, production costs make ethanol more expensive than gasoline. To stimulate the industry in the USA, federal tax credits have been extended to biofuels, which make them even more competitive. Ethanol (Ethyl Alcohol) is a biofuel produced by the fermentation of starches or sugars. Fermentation is the process used in the production of alcoholic beverages but instead of drinking it, we distill it and put in in our cars.

Corn Ethanol - USA is the leading producer. 14% of the USA’s corn crop is dedicated to ethanol. A production tax credit of 51cents helps ethanol compete with gasoline

Ethanol made from Cellulose. Demonstration facilities have shown that this technology can be a cheap and energy efficient process.
