American Association of University Women (AAUW) Delaware Chapter “EMPOWERING WOMEN SINCE 1881” SHAVONNE H. WHITE

Not history… Herstory The American Association of University Women (AAUW) was founded by Marion Talbot along with her friend Ellen Richards; both well-educated women who faced limited options after graduating from college. The social norm in the late 1800’s was that women should not pursue higher education. Those who did were often ridiculed and ostracized. In 1881, the first meeting of the organization that would become AAUW was held and in 1885, they completed their first research study. It was a study that disproved the theory that higher education harms women’s health.

Mission “Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research.”
