"The Gaze"
Human beings become aware of themselves only through “the gaze” of another. Not until we are aware of being watched do we become aware of our own presence. Sartre writes that we perceive ourselves being perceived, and come to objectify ourselves in the same way we are being objectified.
If I think I am a nice person, and I tell everyone I am nice, but YOU tell everyone I am mean. What am I? If everyone views me as a mean person, then…. ?
The “gaze” of the other robs us of our inherent freedom. The “gaze” shapes the decisions you make and gives others power over you. Even when others are not present and you are alone, the “gaze” affects you. When you are getting dressed in the morning, who are you thinking about? What are people thinking about me?
