How to Succeed in School How to Learn how to Learn and Improve Studying Productivity

How People Learn Visual –Reading –Pictures Auditory –Listening Kinesthetic –Practicing –Hands-on

How People Learn The key to successful studying and learning is understanding which way you learn BEST. But, using all the pathways helps the new information stay in your brain longer.

How People Learn Read the written material (visual) Take notes on the written material (visual and kinesthetic) Listen to the lectures (auditory) Take notes on the lecture (auditory and kinesthetic) Rewrite and paraphrase all your notes (visual and kinesthetic) Read the written material and your notes out loud (auditory)

How People Learn Create note cards to quiz yourself by reading out loud a prompting question written on one side when there is a large amount of material to memorize (visual, auditory and kinesthetic).

Preparation Study in a quiet and familiar place If you are an auditory learner, soft music in the background may be helpful Avoid stimulants, such as caffeine Avoid depressants, such as alcohol Set aside a predetermined length of uninterrupted time Take breaks when you feel yourself losing concentration

Preparation Plan to spend approximately 2 hours of study time for every hour of classroom time Make studying appointments with yourself

Preparation Come to class prepared –Read text prior to class time –Bring note taking supplies –Use a voice recorder if needed Be alert Participate in class discussion and ask questions

Review Review tests after they are graded – they may help you with a final exam Speak with your instructor if you are struggling

Review With planning and determination anyone can succeed at school
