Social Goal: Students will stay engaged throughout the lesson, use review to their advantage, and will collaborate with their peers as a means to gain a better understanding of the content.

BREAKDOWN OF THE TEST W/ SUGGESTED TIMES Character matching (5 minutes) 20 characters/questions, 20 points overall Multiple choice (5 minutes) 10 questions, 10 points overall Quote identification (15-20 minutes) 10 quotes, 50 points overall (5 points each) Point Breakdown: 1 point for the name of the story 1 point for the character 3 points for the significance (connection to theory or theme) Essay (15 minutes) 1 essay question, 20 points overall

PRACTICE ON THE ESSAY PORTION For the essay, you will be required to analyze one of the short stories that we have read in class through two different schools of theory. As we have talked about during class, a key to being successful on this test is time management. As such, today we are going to work on our overall time management skills. You will have 15 minutes to write your practice essay in class.

OUTLINE FOR THE YELLOW WALLPAPER Intro: Brief summary of the content of the story, going over the character of the narrator and her relationship to her husband and the individuals in her life. Introduce psychoanalytic and feminist theory, and begin to connect them to the story and their influence on the narrator. Psychoanalytic Paragraph: analyzation of the narrator, and the means in which her mental state has influenced the way that we look at the character, as well as the progression of the plot. Would also look into the means in which the relationship between John and his wife, and their differing viewpoints on the narrator’s mental state. Feminist Paragraph: Talk about the oppression of the narrator, and specifically the symbol of the woman who is trapped in the wallpaper. Make a connection between this woman and the narrator. Also, discuss the narrator’s relationship with her husband. Conclusion: Brief wrap up. Talk about the importance of multiple perspectives in analyzing a story, and the different readings that we may have based on the lens that we are looking through. Perhaps through the psychoanalytic lens we suggest that the narrator was crazy when she came in, which caused her hallucinations and such. Or, through a feminist lens, we can see that her insanity was brought out through the oppression and confinement to the room.

TIMED WRITING Seeing as you have the whole rest of the test to finish before this, we are going to practice this under time. You will get 15 minutes to work on this, and then we will move on I would suggest creating a outline first (not as detailed as mine) and then move on to the actual essay Since this is an in class essay, do not worry as much about spelling, grammar, etc.
