Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 11–8) Main Idea and Vocabulary Example 1:Reflect a Figure Over the x-Axis Example 2:Reflect a Figure Over the y-Axis

Main Idea/Vocabulary reflection Graph reflections on a coordinate plane.

Example 1 Reflect a Figure Over the x-Axis Triangle ABC has vertices A (2, 4), B (0, 7), and C (–2, 2). Graph the figure and its reflected image over the x-axis. Then find the coordinates of the reflected image. A is 4 units from the axis. B is 7 units from the axis. C is 2 units from the axis. Graph triangle ABC on a coordinate plane. Then count the number of units between each vertex and the x-axis.

Example 1 Reflect a Figure Over the x-Axis Make a point for each vertex the same distance away from the x-axis on the opposite side of the x-axis and connect the new points to form the image of triangle A′B′C′. Answer: The coordinates are A′ (2, –4), B′ (0, –7), and C′ (–2, –2).

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 1 Triangle DEF has vertices D (2, 3), E (5, 3), and F (5, 6). Graph the figure and its reflected image over the x-axis. Then find the coordinates of the reflected image. A.B. C.D.

Example 2 Reflect a Figure Over the y-Axis Quadrilateral RSTV has vertices R (2, 3), S (–1, 5), T (–3, 0), and V (3, –4). Graph the figure and its reflected image over the y-axis. Then find the coordinates of the reflected image. R is 2 units from the axis. S is 1 unit from the axis. T is 3 units from the axis. V is 3 units from the axis. Graph quadrilateral RSTV on a coordinate plane. Then count the number of units between each vertex and the y-axis.

Example 2 Reflect a Figure Over the y-Axis Make a point for each vertex the same distance away from the y-axis on the opposite side of the y-axis and connect the new points to form the image of quadrilateral R′S′T′V′. Answer: The coordinates are R′ (–2, 3), S′ (1, 5), T′ (3, 0) and V′ (–3, –4).

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 2 Quadrilateral WXYZ has vertices W (2, 2), X (1, 3), Y (0, 3) and Z (3, –1). Graph the figure and its reflected image over the y-axis. Then find the coordinates of the reflected image. A.B. C.D.
